Four times more speed in Fossil's Smartwatch development
Elevating Fossil's Wearables: How I Scaled Their Design System to Boost Efficiency and Consistency Across Global Teams

The Challenge
Fossil's Wearables line was growing rapidly, but each product team was designing in silos, leading to inconsistent patterns, duplicated effort, and a fragmented user experience across apps and devices.
As a UX consultant, I was brought in to maintain and enhance their design system, ensuring consistency while empowering teams to design and develop faster.
The Process
We approached this with a structured, system-first methodology:
- Audit & Research — Reviewed 150+ UI patterns across Fossil's wearable ecosystem. Interviewed designers and engineers to understand pain points.
- Principles & Foundation — Established core design principles to guide decision-making. Defined typography, color tokens, iconography, and spacing scales.
- Components & Patterns — Created modular UI components and grids that scaled across watch faces, apps, and companion products. Documented interaction patterns with clear accessibility guidelines.
- Tools & Integration — Built the system in Sketch + InVision + Craft, managed via Abstract. Ensured integration into developer workflows despite legacy toolchains.
- Testing & Iteration — Ran usability tests on 3 core wearable apps to validate components. Iterated based on accessibility, performance, and cross-device consistency.
Key Design Decisions
- Accessibility baked in: WCAG 2.1 compliance from color palettes to motion sensitivity.
- Cross-platform grids: Ensured consistency between wearable displays and mobile companion apps.
- Component reusability: Focused on drag-and-drop efficiency → reduced prototype build time by ~35%.

Client Testimonial
"Working with Eduardo as our UX consultant has been a game-changer for Fossil Wearables. The enhancements made to our design system have not only improved the user experience but also streamlined our internal design and development processes. His expertise, professionalism, and attention to detail have been invaluable throughout the project. We look forward to future collaborations!" — Jeff Snow, Design Manager, Fossil Wearables.
Before & After
Fragmented design language → inconsistent UIs, duplicated work, slower releases.
Unified design system → faster delivery, accessibility built in, consistent wearable UX globally.
Impact
This project reinforced the value of design systems as enablers of scale and brand trust. By reducing inefficiencies and creating one source of truth, Fossil could deliver consistent experiences across wearables — a critical factor in a competitive consumer tech market.
Takeaway
For me, Fossil proved that design systems aren't just internal assets — they are strategic tools that directly impact product quality, speed, and user trust.
If your team is scaling products and struggling with design consistency, I can help build the system that powers growth.
